Designing a cafe identity that stands alone — yet lives within a family
Challenge
The cafe needed to function both inside and outside ASAI's hospitality ecosystem — attracting villa guests while building its own local following. The challenge: create an identity that feels independent yet unmistakably part of the family.
Approach
I led the brand strategy from naming to visual execution. When the client proposed "Golden Mile" — a location reference — I challenged it, recognizing it disconnected from ASAI's emotional core and aesthetic language.
Keeping "ASAI Cafe" preserved brand equity while the architecture itself became the visual anchor. The brick facade pattern evolved into the logo structure and graphic foundation — turning a physical detail into a scalable brand system.

The original "Golden Mile" concept felt disconnected from ASAI's aesthetic DNA. I proposed keeping "ASAI Cafe" — restoring the visual and emotional link while giving the space its own distinct presence.

The logo drew directly from the building's brick facade — its pattern and geometry became the foundation for the entire graphic system, creating architectural continuity between space and brand.

A year after launch, the team considered renaming ASAI Cafe to 'ASAI Restaurant' to attract evening guests. I advised against it — the brand was established, and the shift could happen through design, not renaming. We evolved the tone instead: refined menus, evening graphics, and an elegant Christmas campaign. Two uniform sets — day and dinner service — helped define the dual rhythm: cafe by day, restaurant by night.

Outcomes
- Local following established — the cafe became a go-to spot for both villa guests and Jimbaran community
- Dual-service model works — cafe by day, restaurant by night, no rebranding needed
- Revenue growth — continues through seasonal menus and on-brand promotion
- Brand consistency maintained — across uniforms, packaging, digital, and space
- Visual identity became distinctive — the brick-based graphics make the cafe instantly recognizable in Jimbaran's F&B scene
Impact
What began as a villa amenity evolved into a standalone destination. The identity system proved flexible enough to support both casual breakfast service and elevated dinner experience — demonstrating that strategic design can shift perception without losing brand equity.
The cafe now drives independent revenue while strengthening ASAI's lifestyle positioning. The upcoming gym and retail line continue to build on this foundation.
